Living in Longmont, I love going to Boulder when I need a dose of "city life." It's closer than Denver, and more fun IMHO.

Muggin at the Nut with good friends! The hiking is awesome too.

Ran the Boulder Boulder and puked up Gatorade 0.2 miles from the finish line. Gross, yes, but funny.

Cheap Thrills: Free Day at the Museum

If you're like most grown-ups without kids, you probably haven't been to your local natural history museum since junior high. Yawn, you say? Well, you might be surprised. I think you're doing good with the powershot. If light is a concern, the it would probably do you good to upgrade to an DSLR. You can get a wide angle-zoom lens that will meet the majority of your need except the light weight option. ; )

Personally, I rarely shoot in full manual. I have on occasion but I'm more apt to shoot in either aperture or shutter priority. Why? Well it depends on what it takes to meet the goal/intention of the shot. Am I trying to blur the background (bokeh) and focus on my subject? Am I trying to show my subject's movement such as a bike race with a blurred motion background? Etc.

From what I could see in your photographs, it looks like you have a eye for composition. I take it that you're familiar with the much talked about "rule of thirds"?
